Dear Janice,
Thank you for your email and your response. Yogananda does not specify what kind of milk one should drink. In the book he says to “drink at least a glassful of good milk each day.” So it’s clear that in the book he leaves it up to your individual preference. He does say, “Never drink milk with your meals. Milk taken with a heavy dinner produces indigestion. Drink milk alone or with fruits”…he further adds “eat no bread with milk as liquids dilute the saliva required to assist digestion.” Clearly, fruits are easier to digest than other foods. I hope this is helpful. The book should be available from Crystal Clarity Publishers by the end of January.

Thank you for sharing these insights. I do have a question regarding the consumption of milk… Specifically, what type of milk is suggested here?? Raw/pasteurized , goats, cow, etc. I personally have not drunk milk for years, because I don’t think it to be healthy or needed after adolescence. Any thoughts you can share on this? Otherwise, all the other points were spot on for me..

Thank you for writing about your experiences with aging. At 69 I have lived my first year with chronic pain. I admit it has been a challenge. While it did slow me down, it also gave a peaceful quality to my day. My life is now very quiet and sometimes easier than when I was younger with more responsibilities. While my meditations have been done in between my periods of pain, my connection is strong as if the quiet allows my heart to remain open. I can more easily let go of expectations and accept what each day brings. Often people and places seem especially beautiful. Your article reflects courage not only in selecting aging as the topic, but in your honesty in describing how it affects you.

Thanks for a wonderful article. Not long ago I overheard an Ayurvedic physician (who also happens to be an MD) telling someone that their food allergies could be cured by shifting their thinking. I later had a conversation with him about the role of stress bringing on many maladies and reflecting that my food allergies started at a time of stress in my life. I am bit by bit now curing myself of several food allergies. Harnessing the power of the mind is so amazing! Keep up your youthful writing.

At this time of year, another very important movie regarding the tranformation from selfishness and greed to the loving and selfless concern for others is the “Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens. Most everyone has seen this movie, but it is a helpful reminder to what is really important in our lives. It is very easy for all of us to get caught up in our own concerns about the future. Daily fears and worries about paying bills and meeting our obligations can weigh us down. We can become like Scrooge and get pulled down by the forces of materialism symbolized by the weight of Marley’s chains.

At this time of year it is important to tune into the promise of the winter solstice and the awakening of the Christ Consciousness. There is a deep connection between the winter solstice and the birth of Christ. Although the winter solstice is the darkest time of the year, it also marks the rebirth and ascension of the light. As yogis, we can meditate on awakening the Christ Consciousness within us. For Yogananda has said that the second coming of Christ is an inner realization of Christ in all of us. By meditating on the Christ Consciousness, we can transform ourselves from the dire of materialism to the illumination of spirituality. We can free ourselves from the chains of delusion and become liberated children of light.

It’s very interesting, Yogananda gives his devotees a subtle hint on how to practice the art of astral projection in order to realize that we are more than our bodies and to rise above the fear of death, and experience the celestial realm of angels.

Although many yogi’s dismiss the practice of astral projection, Yogananda talks about many of his astral experiences in his “Autobiography of a Yogi”. I have had many astral projection experiences in my own life. It has helped me to fully realize that we are essentially Spirit and that we can leave our bodies to experience higher realms of consciousness.

As Yogananda says by, “experiencing death consciously” you will lose your fear of death. By losing the fear of death, one is able to live more fearlessly and free in one’s life with the profound understanding of who we really are.

If possible I’d like to recommend the movie “La Belle Verte” it’s a French comedy (in english “The Beautiful Green”) that depicts the story of an alien from a planet more advanced then ours coming to visit the earth, in her naive way and pure approach she single out the elements for misery and diseases to be centered in our wrong way of life and the lack of appreciation to the nature and one another.
Its not so much spiritual as it is fundamental to the spiritual way of living, in communities, growing your own food, exercising the brain, being vegetarian and most of all caring for one another.
There are some simple yet beautiful lines from this movie that knock me out every time, for example when Mila the alien tries to understand why earth ladies wear lipstick she asks one, tha latter answers her that it’s for being pretty, Mila doesnt understand, the women tries to explain further and says: it’s to be ettractive” Mila is just more confused “towards who?” she askes, “well everyone”, the woman answers “its so that people will love you”, “that must be hard” points out Mila, and the woman looks sad and thoughtful. Seeing as she upset her host, Mila asks about the picture of her husband and children “are these your loved ones?” the women affirms her, “then why arent they wearing lipstick?” askes Mila.

This article hits “home” into the centre of my heart and mind!
I did all the ego stuff in business for 25 years with “great success”, but the price I paid personally was immense. Instead of a fulfilling inner life, I dealt forever with my own and others ego, pride, anger, fear of losing, greed, envy, sadness, negativity, sorrow, pain, guilt…
Now in my “temple of silence” it is high time to transform all those in the Now, and not being occupied in my mind and heart during meditation with the negative experiences from past conditioning. Thank you so much for your inspirational sharing. I will be 65 years old soon and also have a 96 year old mother in a nursing home that I visit daily. I have had the same fear of the Medicare/Social Security age that you had at that time and have been absorbing the cultural attitude of “it’s all downhill now,” sometimes taking on my mom’s postures, mentally and physically. I will now take action to work on reversing those thoughts completely and work on maintaining my youth and energy.

Dear Marije,
While it is true that desires are a fact of life, they are essentially of two types. The first is outward desires which seek the pleasure of the senses and worldly fulfillment. They are ego-oriented and transitory in nature. The other type is desire for God which takes us inward to the center of our being and are soul-oriented.

In the traditional yogic sense, desires are considered the great enemy because they are endless and keep us reincarnating lifetime after lifetime. It is no exaggeration to say that, according to the Indian scriptures, this can go on for millions of lifetimes. However, once we realize that outward desires can never give us the fulfillment they promise, the desire for God can very quickly take us to liberation.

In the meantime the best course of action is to try and spiritualize your desires by seeing God as the Doer in your life and offering them up to Him on a daily basis. I would strongly suggest that you read the book “The Essence of Self-Realization” to get Paramhansa Yogananda’s insights into the nature of desire and what it means. To order click here

Thanks for your email and your response to the article “Step Outside the Cosmic Motion Picture” by Swami Kriyananda. I can understand your point of view: “if it’s all illusion, what is the point?” But you might be missing the point. In this article Swami doesn’t say “there is therefore no reality” he is saying that God is the reality, not this manifested universe that we think of as real. I hope this is helpful

I sure needed to hear that today. I have an important music performance tonight, and being rusty, wondered about my gravelly weak voice but, more important, forgetting the words. A couple weeks ago, however, as a favor to a friend, I sang at an old folks home. I didn’t even bother to brush up. I just hurried over there, and thought if I greeted everybody cheerfully and attended to them devotedly, things would be fine, as I love old folks. Well, I soared happily through many songs, each bringing inspiration and requests in fresh fun directions. I got a glowing thank you card saying that the ones who didn’t attend were sorely teased. So, tonight, why would this audience be different than old folks I love? Can I love my audience whoever they are? Of course. They have come to me from Master and I can saddle up nice and close to him through my endearment to these people. Worst case scenario: if I forget the words to a song, surely I wouldn’t forget all the words. And even so, my musicians are such an inspiration to me, hearing their parts will propel mine out in blissful unity, whether the words be mumbles or glimpses of wisdom! I can emote ribbons of gracefully flowing tones of creativity, in tune, in any case! Oh thank you Swami. Even just reading certain key sentences of this dialogue sparked my heart. Let the games begin, and a good time is to be had by all!

How lovely to hear your story in your own words and to re-connect with you this way. I appreciate you relating the struggles and courage to move ahead and reach for something your heart led you to.

I can relate wholeheartedly to what you said – that Jesus and Yogananda and the other great masters call us to be as enlightened as they are. I think it has taken me many years to realize that and that is what I am working toward.

Thank you for writing this article! Both my parents are Jewish and one of my brother is orthodox Jewish. I found Ananda about 10 years ago and though I could relate to Krishna and Yogananda, I always had trouble relating to Jesus for the reasons you state. My family really objected when I started getting interested in Eastern Spirituality some 25 years ago, but I just did not feel any strong connection to Judaism. About 3 years ago I dated an Israeli woman. One night about 3 months after we met, Moses appeared to me on my bed. I had never really thought about him, and I was dumbfounded, all I could say was “thank you for the 10 commandments.” I wish I had asked him something else, but he gave me some specific advice and then disspeared. It was at that moment I made my peace with Judaism, knowing that Moses was with me and supported my spirtiual path through our line of gurus.

I am glad to see these type of questions and answers. I am learning good things through this. I have read the “Autobiography of a Yogi.” It is very nice. Paramhansa Yogananda explained about Kriya yoga and Mahavatar Babaji.
Actually, when I was in 10 years old, my neighbour used to read that book. She inspired me about him. Obviously, I could not understand then because of my age, but now I am 26. I have a small wish that I want to see Mahavatar Babaji once. I want to be a student of his. Thank you all.

Dear Swamiji,

Worried friends and Napoleon Hill’s advice to be very specific with the object of your will power (in terms of the date, the amount of money etc) had me very confused. Revising and re-revising my affirmation diminished my confidence.

I remember being healed of an ailment during a satsang when I was completely oblivious of the need for healing. It was my doctor who noticed it with amazement.

The difficult times are indeed hitting: hurricanes, fires and earth quakes. So many people are looking for ways to survive. Thank you for giving me the key to solution consciousness and non-attachment. It was just what was needed. With deepest gratitude, Rachelle

I want to thank you for sharing this article. When you gave me my Kriya check at Spiritual Renewal Week, I felt such a kinship with you, and just assumed that it was Master’s love and my appreciation for receiving your guidance on my practice. As I read your story, with the exception of a few details, it was mine also. I found my connection with Jesus around age 30, and I was raised as a conservative Jew is Long Beach, CA. Many of the feelings you had along the way I shared with you, because of my own feelings of betraying my religious roots. Yet the love of God came through all of my confusion and saw me through many ups and downs along the way. Thank you again for sharing your personal journey and also for helping me breath more deeply in my practice.
